A visit to Longwood Gardens, PA

Madeleine came to visit 8th of September to escape Hurricane Irma.  Took the opportunity to take a day trip to see DuPont’s old estate, Longwood Gardens, in Pennsylvania near the border of Delaware.

A weekend in Rehobeth Beach, Delaware

22 – 24 September 2017

I had two free Marriott Stays I needed to use up.  So I took my walking buddy, Regina, for a weekend in Rehobeth Beach.  Rehobeth Beach is on the eastern shore, north of Ocean City.  It was hosting a Garlic Festival for the first time and we thought it might be fun to check it out.

I picked up Regina from her home at 2 pm. We arrived at the Salisbury Marriott Courthouse by 5 pm. We had dinner at the “Irish Grill and Pub”. Shared a seafood bothy (scallops, shrimp, fish, carrot, onion, potato pancake), crab dip and pretzel.

Up at 8. We had strawberries and milk that I bought downstairs with our breakfast coffee. The Rehoboth Beach garlic festival started at 11 am.  When we got there we had to call the organizer to find out where to pick up our VIP tickets and voting cards.

Only 125 people participated. There were seven restaurants showing off their culinary skills.

  • Garlic bread
  • Chipotle aiole corn soup
  • Chicken wings
  • Roasted garlic and camembert, brie, (Voted best use of garlic by the participants)
  • 3 soups,
  • Pasta sausage comfort food,
  • Wild mushrooms on chiappata, (I loved this one.  Regina didn’t like mushrooms)
  • Shrimp wontons,
  • Breaded fried egg smoked garlic, cheese (really nice presentation)

We shared a margarita at “Papa Grande”. Regina stopped and bought some caramel popcorn. She had a glass of white wine while I had a root beer at “The Pond” while we waited for the winners to be announced at 4:45 pm.  We also ate more chicken wings!

Afterwards we walked the boardwalk to get our 10,000 steps.

Drove back to Salisbury at 7:30 pm . Stopped a DQ and had small ice cream cone for dinner.   Our hotel for the night was at the Marriott Residence Inn which gave a free breakfast. Hooray! There was also microwave popcorn in room.

We decided to just go to the beach rather than driving out of the way towards Assateague and Ocean City.

Regina rented us an umbrella and chairs at the beach for $24. It was a very civilized way to enjoy the beach.

After 3 pm we went for a bite at “Cooter Johns” where we had the fried egg appetizer the day before. We shared some smokey chicken wings and a Frito concoction that was similar to an enchilada with a salad that had blue cheese peaches and nuts.

We listened to 70’s music on Spotify during the drive back. I dropped Regina home by 8 p.m. Thus ended a fun trip!
